Roll up, roll up: this year’s NIPE regional events are coming soon

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: NHS Newborn and Infant Physical Examination

The NHS Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) team is very pleased to announce we will be holding 5 regional all-day events this May and June.

The events will be held in Bristol, Leicester, Manchester, London and York (venues and booking details below). We may consider holding more events later in the year if these 5 events are well attended and evaluated and if there is demand.

NIPE screens newborn babies within 72 hours of birth, and then once again between 6 and 8 weeks, for conditions relating to their heart, hips, eyes and, in boys, their testes.  The 6 to 8 week screen is necessary as some conditions appear later in a child’s development.

The morning sessions of the regional events will provide a programme update – letting you know what we have done, are doing and plan to do. This part of the day will be relevant for all stakeholders including those who lead and deliver NIPE screening services, commissioners, screening and immunisation teams, and NIPE educators. At the end of the morning session there will be a question and answer session, so please bring along your NIPE programme questions.

The afternoon session will concentrate on ‘Becoming smarter with NIPE SMART’. This part of the programme is primarily aimed at users of the NIPE SMART IT system but we would also welcome other stakeholders who are interested.  It will cover some content from the recently launched NIPE SMART user guide.

NIPE SMART provides a failsafe system and a consistent means of capturing data from the newborn and infant physical examinations that are offered to all newborn babies. It supports healthcare professionals in improving the quality, timeliness and consistency of the examinations and reducing the number of babies diagnosed late with congenital medical conditions.

We emailed the NIPE SMART user guide to all our hospital trust contacts using the NIPE SMART system.  This is now also more widely available to all users and can be accessed on the NIPE SMART ‘live’ system.

Please email the national NIPE team as soon as possible to secure your place at one of the events or for further information. Places are limited so please book early. You must book at least 2 weeks before the date of the event (subject to availability).
